Deemed to be on the periphery of international communism, this newly found &#8216;independence&#8217; prompted a turn towards Communist Parties developing their own &#8216;roads&#8217; to socialism, and by extension unofficial organising hubs or spheres of influence.<\/p>\n<p>The debate between the CPGB and CPA in 1947-48, therefore, underlines the shifting relationships and ideological realignments within the international communist movement, under the increasing weight of the Cold War and decolonization. Charges of reformism, sectarianism, insufficient anti-imperialist activism, and the ultimate &#8216;transition&#8217; to socialism shed light on the policing of international communist debate, and the embryonic \u2018national roads to socialism\u2019 policy.<\/p>\n<p>The talk\u00a0will be based on Greg&#8217;s research which also formed the basis of an\u00a0article published in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sslh.org.uk\/2023\/04\/20\/uncomradely-and-un-communist-breakdown-in-the-communist-anglosphere-the-communist-party-of-great-britain-and-communist-party-of-australia-debate-1947-1948\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/sslh.org.uk\/2023\/04\/20\/uncomradely-and-un-communist-breakdown-in-the-communist-anglosphere-the-communist-party-of-great-britain-and-communist-party-of-australia-debate-1947-1948\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1689423619576000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0u9sNhHIEr3y-kokzr5SH1\">Labour History Review<\/a>\u00a0in April 2023<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gregory Billam<\/strong> is a PhD candidate and Graduate Teaching Assistant in the History Department at Edge Hill University.
